#NAW19 Tips on apprenticeship applications

A great apprentice adds to a business, bringing with them a fresh outlook and helping the business grow. But how do you show the employer what you can do through an application?

Here are some top tips from Gloucestershire College…

1. A good place to start is by researching the business. This is a useful thing to do not only to learn about them but also for you to make sure that the company is right for you. Consider their location, the working hours and how you would travel there. Learn about what they do and understand the history of the business. That way if you get to the interview stage and they ask you why you want to work for them, you will have a genuine response.

2. Try to fill in the application succinctly but with as much detail as possible. The more information you put into it, the more your personality will show. However, no waffling allowed – every point must illustrate to the employer why YOU would be valuable to their organisation. It can be difficult to strike a balance so it may help to ask a guardian or friend to have a look over your application, ensuring there’s no repetition.

3. It is always worth it so do take your time. Applications can take a lot of thought and effort but it pays off and you gain more experience every time. Make sure you understand the job role and show that you are the individual that is right for the job, with the core skills and attributes they are looking for. They aren’t expecting you to know everything, but they do need to see that you are willing to learn and are genuinely interested in the role.

4. Make your application stand out from the others! Easier said than done we know but everyone is different and has their edge – you simply need to show it. Write down details and examples of the specific projects, trips and activities you have been involved in. Even if you think they aren’t anything special, it can be to the employer. Think about how your experiences link to the job role and requirements.

5. It is vital to check spelling and punctuation before submission. Make sure you sift through your application with a fine tooth comb. It can help to come back to it after a short break with fresh eyes. It is important to show that you have a good level of written communication in any job.
